Patriotic Haystack Recipe!
This haystack recipe is pretty easy to make, requires no cooking time and is ready in no time at all. You may even have a lot of the ingredients already laying around the house too! These are a perfect last minute recipe that you can take to any summer event for a unique snacking dish.
Yields: 1 dozen
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 1/2 cups chow mein noodles
- 1 cup cocktail peanuts
- 12 oz bag Wilton bright white candy melts
- 1/4 cup Wilton red candy melts
- 1/4 cup Wilton royal blue candy melts
- Patriotic nonpareils, jimmies and star sprinkles
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Line a large cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Set aside.
2. Add the chow mein noodles and cocktail peanuts to a large mixing bowl. Gently toss to mix and set aside.
3. In a double boiler melt the white candy melts over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool for 2-3 minutes.
4. Pour the melted white chocolate on top of the peanuts and chow mein noodles and gently toss to coat.
5. Transfer the mixture onto the lined cookie sheet , in the shape of “haystacks.”
6. Sprinkle each haystack with the red, white and blue nonpareils and jimmies.
7. In a small microwave bowl, microwave the red candy melts for 45 seconds. Stir until melted. Drizzle the melted red chocolate on top of half of the haystacks. Sprinkle with red white and blue star-shaped sprinkles.
8. Microwave the blue candy melts for 45 seconds. Stir until melted. Drizzle on top of the remaining haystacks. Sprinkle with patriotic star shaped sprinkles.
9. Chill for 20 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
If you want to make your patriotic haystacks even more creative – add a cupcake flag topper or toothpick on the top of each one for a little extra patriotic pizazz. The haystacks should stay fresh for up to 2 weeks when stored in an airtight container.
Although we noted the use of a double boiler for the melting of the white candy a great alternative that is much easier and gives a more consistent melt is the Wilton Candy Melting pot.
