Tips for Choosing a Builder!
Choosing a builder isn’t as easy as some might think. We found that out 6 years ago when we were looking for a builder in Clermont, Fl. It was the first house that we ever built and didn’t know a lot about building but we asked a lot of questions. Most people think that a builder would do just about anything you wanted them to do. However, that isn’t so. There was one builder in Florida that wouldn’t put in granite, a jacuzzi tub, or even hardwood floors. We thought…okay, then we will go somewhere else. Luckily, we came across Highland Homes of Clermont and they were the best two guys ever. (they were brothers) We liked them so much that they were going to be our choice for our next home that we built in Central Florida. Even when we had a problem five years later, they took care of it without any questions asked. But as you can see, we are moving to Kansas.
The funny thing is when we were in the panhandle of Florida and checking out some new construction homes, we came across that certain builder that wouldn’t do any of things that we had wanted. But we figured we would check it out and ask some questions. Nope, still the same as they were six years ago. Would they put tile in the showers instead of a tub surround? Nope, you can do that after you move in. Would they do this, this and this? Nope! Okay then, see ya!
Tips for Choosing a Builder:
- Ask a lot of questions when choosing a builder!
- Make sure you can get what you want!
- Look for quality construction.
- Ask around for recommendations.
- Stay within your budget.
- Make sure they are licensed.
- Visit many model homes. (customer homes too)
- What kind of warranty comes with the house?
- How long have they been in business?
- Does he belong to the Home Builders Association?
- Can you meet the owner(s) of the company? (The most important in my opinion!)
In this particular development that we are going to be in, Country Hollow, we had our choice of two builders. After seeing the floor plans from both builders, asking a lot of questions and getting prices for everything we wanted, we decided to go with Prairie Construction. The contract is signed and ground breaking should start soon.
These are the basic floor plans but we have done quite a few tweaks. You will see more in the coming months.
We liked the floor plans and the way everything in the house looked along with all the options we were able to get for the price we wanted to pay. If you have never built a house before, there is so much to think about and so many decisions to make even before you start building. I think we visited just about every development in the area and seen every model home there was to see. Then you have to decide on what options are important to you in order to stay within your budget.
The only thing that we have to remember is not to forget the things we forgot the last time we built a home.
We I am excited to get this show on the road. Be sure to follow along and see how the home building goes.
