My Favorite Aladdin Memory – The Magic Carpet!

Unlike most of the bloggers that were on the trip to LA with me, I was already 33 when Aladdin originally came out in 1992 with two kids ages 9 and 13! I know, I’m showing my age, but that doesn’t mean that I love it any less.
I remember when it came out and I took my boys to the show to see it. We didn’t go to the movies often because I was a single mom who didn’t have a lot of resources. So when there was a movie that we all wanted to see, it was a big deal and Aladdin was one of them.
One of my favorite memories from the movie was the “magic carpet”. The “magic carpet” has a soft spot in my heart. Why?
When I was little, my family would visit a small amusement park called Crystal Beach just over the border in Canada. It was only 30 minutes away so we visited often. Upon entering the park there was a ride so to speak called nothing other than “The Magic Carpet” ride. Now you have to remember that this was in the 60’s and early 70’s.
It was kind of like a “fun house”. It had funny mirrors, crooked rooms, glow in the dark stuff, and it ended with the “magic carpet”. It was the first ride my dad and I would go on. The “magic carpet” was nothing but a carpet on metal rollers maybe about 20 ft. long. At least it seemed really long when I was little.
My dad would hold my hand and we would sit next to each other and take the “magic carpet” out! It was fun and the “magic carpet” in Aladdin made me think of that.
Crystal Beach has been gone for quite some time now. My dad passed away the following year and watching Aladdin always brings back those special memories.
Another one of my favorites from Aladdin is the song “A Friend Like Me.” It makes me think of Robin Williams and how much enthusiasm he had for acting and how funny he was. We learned some things about Robin Williams from our presentation with Eric Goldberg and I am glad to have been able to attend that.
