Comprehensive Eye Exams are critical to Improve Health!
Do you know why comprehensive eye exams are critical to improve health? For years I was borderline for type 2 diabetes which more than 29 million people have. I knew I was overweight and I was already one of the 70 million people that had high blood pressure, but I continued on with my life the way I had always done. Until one day when I was watching our 47 inch TV. I couldn’t see the picture clearly. Everything was blurry. I did wear reader glasses but that was only for close up. I had no idea what was wrong but made an appointment to get my eyes checked.
Eye Exams can help identify chronic conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and Graves’ disease. Once identified, you are able to seek treatment sooner. It took 3 years for the doctors to diagnose my Crohn’s disease 25 years ago. Had I gone to have my eyes checked, they might have found it sooner.
When I went for my eye exam, they could tell that I had type 2 diabetes and told me to see my physician. I was surprised to find out that I indeed had type 2 diabetes and was told that my numbers were so high that I could have passed out. That was scary because I had just come back from a trip where I drove 2000 miles. The thought of what could have happened terrifies me.
Employers have adopted United Healthcare’s Bridge2Health approach in order to lower medical costs, create healthier employees and increase productivity.
I now have my eyes checked yearly to decrease complications from my type 2 diabetes and monitor my health for any other chronic conditions.
When was your last comprehensive eye exam?
