Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks up some unknown amount of time after the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. By now Star-Lord and his team have started making a name for themselves, picking up work here and there. This isn’t the story of one of those jobs though. This is a much more personal story.

Vol. 2 brings back the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team you fell in love with during the first film, including Groot who without a doubt steals the entire movie. He is the center of almost all the humor in what would otherwise be a somewhat dark movie. It also introduces new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe who I have no doubts we will see again in Infinity War, the next outing for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The funky soundtrack for the first Guardians of the Galaxy was a vital part of its success and helped move give the film a good pace. This isn’t the case so much in Vol. 2. The music is less funky, fitting for the more serious tone the movie takes. But also the songs aren’t popular and widely known. The music also didn’t insert itself quite as naturally as it did during the first film. I would say that the music was merely ok, unlike the first movie which saw its Awesome Mix Vol. 1 reach the top of the US Billboard 200, Billboard Top Soundtracks, Billboard Top Rock Albums, Billboard Top Digital Albums, and Canadian Albums charts.

Perhaps most notable about the film is the fact that so close to Infinity War it doesn’t tie Guardians of the Galaxy into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe any further than they already were. It doesn’t set anything up and doesn’t push them in the direction of Earth. It is as I said before, a personal story that gives us a little bit more insight into Peter’s past. It also lets us get to know the Guardians of the Galaxy a little bit better after the life-changing events of the first movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a lot of fun, but don’t go in expecting a better movie than the first time around. While it does try to capture the same lightning in a bottle magic from Guardians of the Galaxy it doesn’t quite manage it. While Marvel has managed to release blockbuster after blockbuster I would merely call Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 good. When it comes time to doing Marvel Cinematic Universe marathons this will be one of those titles you can skip if you want. You could in some ways compare it to Rogue One, fun to watch but not a necessary part of the overall plot.

However, it should be said that the post credit scenes, yes there really are five of them, ARE vital to the overall Marvel universe and need to be seen. So when the credits start rolling sit tight. You still have a few more minutes of movie to watch.
