First Cruise: What to Wear for Plus Size Women! #SeasTheDay @RoyalCaribbean

First Cruise: What to Wear ~ Plus Size Fashion

First Cruise: What to Wear! Decisions, decisions! But it’s really not as hard as you think. Come along with me on the Royal Caribbean, Liberty of the Seas first cruise to see what outfits I chose to wear.

Here are some tips for what to wear on your first cruise for plus sized women. If you read my blog, you know that I am overweight and on the Weight Watchers program. So, it’s not always easy finding the right clothes that fit me. I actually came across a few new stores that I had never heard of (probably because I haven’t gone shopping for any new clothes in a really long time). They have some very, very nice clothes and I probably went a little overboard (no pun intended) shopping for my first cruise. But, you only live once.

Let me start off by saying that even after all the research for first cruise packing tips I did before going on my first cruise…I still brought too much. It wasn’t until I was getting off the ship, that it finally set in that I was OVERPACKED! It was great that I didn’t have to worry about not having enough outfits to choose from, but when I disembarked, I had to lug all my suitcases with me.

Now, you can have your luggage ready the night before, and they will take it off for you, BUT, I thought that was just for those that were flying. Since I was leaving the ship early because I was driving, I figured my luggage had wheels and I would be okay…I didn’t need to check my luggage. I also wasn’t sure how long I would have to wait to find my luggage after. You know when you have to find your bag after the flight lands? Ahem…not so.

At least next time I will know..pack light and send your bag off the night before. Unless of course, you have your personal bag carrier with you (i.e. husband). This is what I had to lug down the ramp, through customs, out of terminal, across the street to the parking garage, up the elevator and into the trunk. It may not look like a lot, but they were packed FULL! Actually, there is one more bag missing from this picture that contains my camera and electronics. UGH!

first time cruise packing

Well then, lets get started!

First Cruise: What to pack in your Carry on Bag:

When you arrive at the port, you check your bag and it will show up in your room within a couple hours. Your room isn’t ready upon boarding, so you want to make sure you have what you need…just in case it’s more than a few hours.

  • Bathing Suit in case you want to go swimming.
  • Cover up for your bathing suit.
  • Casual outfit for dinner. Our luggage had arrived way before dinner time, but we had it just in case.
  • Sweater in case you are chilly on the deck or in the restaurant. It was breezy on deck but not chilly.
  • Medications ~ they MUST be in their original containers in order to get through customs. I wanted to just bring enough in my daily pill containers, but they said no.

That’s pretty much it for your carry on bag.

First Cruise: What to pack for your daily dinners:

We were on a four night cruise so that meant we had three casual dinners and one formal dinner. Here is where I wasted a lot of luggage space, because I couldn’t decide what I wanted to wear to them. You are assigned a dining room and a table number at a certain time where you sit everyday and have the same server. OR, you can eat in any of the restaurants, including the buffet at Windjammer Cafe if you want to.

First Cruise: Casual Dinner Dress:

For Women:

  • Sundress.
  • Pants or Capri’s with a nice shirt.
  • No Flip Flops.
  • No Jeans.
  • No Tank Tops.
  • No Shorts.

For Men:

  • Nice Pants.
  • Nice Shirt.
  • No Shorts.
  • No Tank Tops.
  • No Jeans.

Now with that being said, I did notice women coming in with jeans on but paired with a dressier shirt and nice shoes. Also, there were men that had on nice shorts and I didn’t see anyone telling them they couldn’t eat there.

My original intention was to take a picture in each outfit…but I forgot!

As you can see, there are many items that are worn multiple times as to cut down on suitcase space (wish I knew that ahead of time). It’s also a good idea to bring an extra swimsuit, whatever you sleep in, plus your airplane clothes if you are flying in and out. I was driving, so I always choose my most comfortable clothes.

If you are wondering why I always have a big purse, including the formal dinner, it’s because it also holds my camera. Here are a few pictures of the times I did remember to snap a picture of my outfit. (the Frozen picture is not from the cruise, but one of the outfits I did wear)

As I mentioned above about overpacking…if you look at my picture of the bags above, The navy blue bag and the laptop rolling bag, are the only 2 bags I would have needed. I put all my dirty clothes that I wore in the blue bag. That means…everything in the huge red bag…I didn’t use!

These are merely suggestions on what to take on your first cruise to give you an idea of what you will need. Mostly because I had no idea and overpacked. You might even have some of these items on hand that you love and easily adaptable for regular sized women.

You might be surprised at the prices when you click on an item, but I never pay full price. There are always great coupon codes out there and all you have to do is search for whatever store you need at the moment. Most of the time, I used a 40% or 50% off my total order coupon. Be sure to start at Swagbucks so you get cash back! I got a ton!

Thanks for cruising along and be sure to stay tuned for more first cruise posts.
