I was invited on a press trip with Disney. All opinions are my own and may differ from yours.
Disney Dreamers & Visionaries Charita Carter and Mike Goslin!
A few weeks ago while in LA for a Tomorrowland event, I was able to chat with Disney Dreamers and Visionaries Charita Carter, Producer at Disney Imagineering, and Mike Goslin,VP of Production and Content at Disney Consumer Products. It was a dream come true in my opinion and it happened at the “most magical place on earth”…Disneyland! They are what makes the magic happen (from behind the scenes) when you walk through those gates.
Disney Dreamers – Charita Carter:
It was interesting to learn just how Charita got started. She started out as an accountant 17 years ago and has moved up to a Disney Dreamer. The funny thing was that her parents discouraged her from becoming an artist. They were first generation to go to college and their perception of an artist was “if you don’t buy my work I have no place to eat or live”. Her mom told her to “stop drawing!” That’s why she went to college for accounting.
But everything worked out for her. She kept that talent in the back of her mind and moved up to become the Producer at Disney Imagineering.
Charita is also a hand model. Yep, there really is such a thing. She was on a Tram holding on and someone noticed her beautiful hands. They gave her a card and she has worked with Bounty, SONOS Music System, and Sara Lee.
One of the things that she remembers most is the first time her parents took her and her siblings to Disneyland. As they walked through the gate, her dad handed them all a $20 bill. From that moment on, it has been a tradition. And that my friends is what memories are made of!
Disney Dreamers – Mike Goslin:
Mike Goslin says that with Playmation they are trying to bring back old school play. You know, we like the physical like, when kids used to run around and climb trees. We’re wrapping it in a Disney story. So that’s what playmation is really all about.
He wants the kids to be sweaty and with their heart racing. They’re using their mind. And you can’t rely on having a screen because it’s portable. They can go wherever they want. They could be outside and running around wearing it.
In the first version that they are launching is with the Marvel avengers. They are giving kids superhero powers in the real world using this technology. I can wear a gauntlet like Ironman’s. And as I play I you know, I feel the kick on my palm when I fire it. If there’s a physical robot that I’m battling against across the room I can fire at it. I’ll hear the sound effects. And he’ll shake and fall over. As I play I’m unlocking new abilities.
The avengers is going to be out next month for this holiday season. Next year will be Star Wars around the same time next year. And then after that is Frozen for 2017.
Mike said that when he was young, he would build things with cardboard and string. One of the movies that helped his imagination was the “Goonies!” They were always building things like the cart. They had tracks and all that stuff. That kind of thing really inspired him. Even the Little Rascals reruns. They were always building stuff. He found that to be really inspiring.
Even though each session was only about 15 minutes each, we learned a wealth of information from both Charita Carter and Mike Goslin.
