5 Tips for a Summer Road Trip!

Before you head out for your summer road trip, there are steps to take to get you, your family and your car ready for it. In the past two years, we have traveled over 30,000 miles, some with the grandkids and some with just the two of us, the dog and the bird. We really have it down to a science now and I’m going to share with you some of our summer road trip tips to help make it easy for you too.

All it takes is careful planning ahead of time. So whether you are traveling with one kid, two kids, five kids or no kids, it really can be a pleasant experience. Of course there is no way to stop the “are we there yet?” questions, but you just might be able to cut down on how many times you hear it.

Before you head out for your summer road trip, there are steps to take to get you & your car ready for it. In the past 2 years, we have traveled 30K miles.

1. Make a list of items needed! I admit it, I’m a list builder. I have a list for this and a list for that. But, it helps me to remember everything when I need it. We used to go camping yearly on Memorial Day weekend. It started before we had kids and continued on for about 20 years. I would realize when we got to the campsite that I forgot this or that. Once I made an ongoing list, I never forgot anything again. If there was something that we needed and didn’t have, I would add it to the list. It really does make life and summer road trips so much easier.

2. Things to Keep Kids Busy! This is an absolute must if traveling with children on a summer road trip. You have to keep kids entertained so they don’t get bored, antsy, or out of control. Stop at rest areas so they can let off some steam. Let them run around, stretch their legs and get some exercise. You’ll be thankful that you did and they might even take a nap once you are back on the road too.

3. Get a Complete Car Checkup! This is a must for a summer road trip. You want to make sure your car is safe and ready for a summer road trip or any trip for that matter. We take our vehicle to Walmart and have everything done. Our tire tread is checked along with all our fluid levels. Our vehicle has high mileage, so we have been using Pennzoil High Mileage which is good for vehicles with over 75,000 miles. It helps to reduce leaks and oil consumption in worn or higher mileage engines.

I feel confident knowing that all Pennzoil products help clean out sludge lesser oils leave behind. Changing your oil when the car manufacturer suggests, will keep your vehicle running in tip top shape and will allow you to drive an extra of 550 miles per year vs. a dirty engine. No other motor oil provides better protection from friction. If our vehicle isn’t ready for an oil change before we leave on our summer road trip, we have it changed anyway. This way we know that we won’t be over by the time we come back.

Plus, Pennzoil also offers a free warranty that covers 15 engine parts that may fail due to engine wear or which experience abnormal wear due to friction. (For more information, check out the Pennzoil Warranty Site.)

The best part about getting your car ready at Walmart Automotive Care Centers is that I can also pick up all the things I need for our summer road trip, which leads us to the next tip.

4. Pack sandwiches, snacks and drinks.  I make sandwiches the night before so that we are able to save some money while traveling.  I pack a bunch of snacks, cookies and drinks to keep everyone happy. This also saves you money by not having to pick up things at the gas station stop.

5. Book hotels in advance.  I plan out the hotels in advance because not all hotels take pets. Yes, our dog goes with us everywhere. I kind of gauge when to stop by seeing how many miles it is to our destination and decide where we will be stopping. Then I search for a hotel, usually on bringfido.com. I always search for coupon codes for the hotel.

Bonus Tip! Have fun! This is the most important of all. If you aren’t having fun, then it won’t be a worthwhile vacation. Sing along together, play games, etc. I make sure to take lots of pictures so we can look back and remember the great time we had.

  1. Our best tip for roadtrips is to enjoy the journey! Stop and see interesting things along the way…it makes the trip so much more fun! Thanks for sharing the rollback info on Pennzoil at Walmart. #client

    • Stopping to see things on the way makes the trips so much more fun. Everyone is always in a hurry to get where they are going, and the vacation ends up feeling like a chore not a vacation.
